A great moment prior to this past Thursday’s Danville Area Community College Board of Trustees meeting when State Senator Scott Bennett stopped by to honor the All Star Jaguars student group that helped his office with a couple of recent projects. One was a clothing distribution and sock drive for the homeless. Then, for Valentine’s Day, there was the big effort to get Valentines to as many Veterans in our area as possible. Senator Bennett said, it was wonderful to see these DACC students, from all different backgrounds, stepping up to assist.
AUDIO: What’s so great is that you have people that are at the top of their field; they’re athletes, they’re star students, and ambassadors to the campus. And yet they’re taking their time with all the other things on their schedule. A lot of people in assisted living communities hadn’t had a lot of visitors during the pandemic, hadn’t had much mail even. And so we said, “well it would be great if we could at least deliver them some valentines, a chance to get some communication with the outside world.” These students really stepped up and helped us get to a point where we had thousands of valentines to deliver all across Vermilion County.
And as for the clothing drive, Senator Bennett says those things, no matter what age you are, always touch the heart.
AUDIO: Socks, of course, is the number one needed item for homeless shelters. And it breaks your heart because they especially ask for kids sizes. So again it was terrific to see local students stepping up, and making sure we were getting more contributions than ever.
