At approximately 11:00 a.m. today, May 14, 2024, Westville Police Department was dispatched to the Dollar General store in Westville for a report of a subject that had implied to the employee that he had a firearm after he was confronted by the employees for retail theft. No firearm was ever displayed or witnessed.
The suspect fled the business on foot into a wooded area near the store. Out of an abundance of caution due to their proximity to the incident location, Westville School District was notified and placed their facilities on soft lockdown until the situation could be investigated.
At no time was a threat directed toward any schools or the community. WPD school resource officers were and are on hand at the schools and they have resumed normal operations.
