History was made at last evening’s (February 6th, 2018) Danville City Council meeting. It marked the first time that Vice Mayor Brenda Brown presided over a meeting. And thus, it was also the first time a Black female presided over an official City Council meeting.
Ed Butler, President of the Danville Branch of the NAACP, was one of those on hand for the meeting….
Reverend R. J. Davis, who serves with Brown on the City Council, was elated during an interview with VermilionCountyFirst.com News….
(In the photo Butler is on the left and Reverend Davis on the right. The photo was taken after last night’s Danville City Council meeting). Butler noted the historic session occurred during Black History Month.
Mayor Scott Eisenhauer missed the meeting, so that put Vice Mayor Brenda Brown in charge. Brown was elected a Ward 1 alderman in 2015. Her late husband, Lester Brown, was one of the first Black aldermen following the change in Danville’s form of government from the Mayor-Commission to Mayor-Aldermanic. Lester Brown also served as Danville City Treasurer.
