One of the drivers from the Danville area who took the green flag at the Indianapolis 500 has died. Norman ‘Bubby’ Jones was 78. Jones competed in the Indianapolis 500 in 1977. He started 31st and placed 21st in the race.
Jones is perhaps best remembered for his racing on dirt tracks, where he raced in sprint cars and midgets for about two decades. He won races across the country and was inducted into the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame in 1998.
Earlier in his life Jones was the co-owner of a barber shop with Larry ‘Boom-Boom’ Cannon of Oakwood, who also raced in the Indianapolis 500.
‘’Bubby’’ Jones died on Saturday, January 18th.
