More than 200 people are undergoing testing this week at Danville Area Community College that could lead to landing a job with the Illinois Department of Corrections. IDOC spokeswoman Nicole Wilson says applicants have been pre-approved for the test. The event has a goal of filling 20 open DOC positions, but Wilson says the local testing is not necessarily for positions at the Danville Correctional Center.
Those who pass the test may be asked to join the Department of Corrections. They would then be sent to the Academy at Springfield for six weeks of training.
Governor Bruce Rauner has been committed to boosting the staffing levels at the state’s prisons, according to Wilson. The Department hired 694 new correctional officer trainees in FY16 and as of January 4th, 404 correctional officer trainees have been hired in FY17.
The starting salary for a correctional officer trainee is $42,432.
