A light drizzle failed to deter a large turn-out today for the annual Martin Luther King Junior Motorcade-Parade in Danville. Participants joined hands in prayer before beginning the trek from the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Way (West Main Street) and Logan Avenue.
Participants sang along the way and stopped at a statue honoring King that is located at the 100-year-old Jackson Building along North Jackson Street. From there, marchers proceeded to St. James United Methodist Church for a special program honoring King.
Danville Human Relations Director Sandra Finch described what the local MLK Celebration Committee hoped to accomplish in the two days honoring King. ‘’We’re trying to – first of all – remember Dr. King’s legacy, but also promote good human relations in the community. The King Celebration – as well as Community Day – help us to come together as a community, and allow us to fellowship with each other, and just get to know each other better.’’
