Neighbors and others are coming to the aid of some fire victims in Danville and Alvin. The VA Illiana Health Care System is caring for three of four Veterans who were left homeless Thursday following a fire that left another Veteran dead. The blaze was at a residence housing Veterans at 300 Park Street in Danville.
In a statement the VA Illiana Health Care System said it is deeply saddened to learn of the death of a Veteran in this fire, and is doing all it can to assist other Veterans who lived there. The fire claimed the life of 75-year-old David Singleton, who lived there.
The home in question is not sanctioned by, operated by or affiliated with VA Illiana Health Care System, but staff members were taking action to assist the Veterans in need.
The Danville VA said one of the Veterans left homeless by the fire is now living with family. In addition to providing the other three with temporary housing, the local VA has provided the Veterans with basic necessities like clothing, toiletries and medicine, and is providing for their health care needs until permanent housing is found.
Meanwhile neighbors and the American Red Cross is providing assistance to the Louis Dickison family in Alvin. Dickison’s home was heavily damaged in a fire on Thursday. Red Cross volunteers were on the scene shortly after the fire broke out. Those volunteers make sure everyone affected by the fire has a safe place to stay, food, clothing and emotional support.
The American Red Cross is reminding families to make sure their home is equipped with smoke detectors. And also practice fire safety drills at your home.
