Senator Dick Durbin was one of those voting ‘no’ today (Tuesday) as Betsy DeVos was confirmed to be the new U.S. Education Secretary. Senator Durbin has strong feelings against putting DeVos in that position.
‘’This is rare. It is rare that we have a nomination for the position of Secretary of Education which has drawn such controversy,’’ said Durbin. ‘’There were many things that Miss DeVos could have been given as a reward for her loyal service, and all of the things she has done in her life. But to be entrusted with the responsibility of running America’s Public Education System at this critical moment in our history certainly is not one of them as far as I am concerned,’’ said Senator Durbin before the vote.
Vice President Mike Pence was forced to cast the deciding vote on the nomination. Democrats had commented throughout the night on the Senate floor, voicing opposition to the school choice advocate.
