Two of the Veterans displaced by a fatal fire in Danville last week got a hero’s welcome to their new home last evening. Danville Police and Firefighters, along with members of the Illinois Patriot Guard and others escorted the men to their new home at 305 Park Street.
A Veteran’s advocate who goes only by the name of ‘Mohawk Man’ helped organize the effort to find the fire victims a new home. He explained how he got involved. ‘’I’ve been doing Vet-advocacy with my Dad who was a Vietnam Veteran – God rest his soul – for about thirty years. And I received a call and a Facebook message from several individuals saying there was a house on fire with Veterans.’’
And Mohawk Man added it was important to find the men a home in their old neighborhood. ‘’The one guy has been there for fifteen years. He loves this street. He loves this neighborhood, and he loves this city – and he wanted to stay here. They had a lot of fear that they weren’t going to be able to come back or be with Rob. A lot of these guys have no family members. They’re in their sixties and seventies, and a lot of their families have passed.’’
The ‘Rob’ mentioned in that comment is Rob Moreman. He owns the house that burned last week, claiming the life of one of the five Veterans who lived there. Moreman also owns the home where the Veterans are relocating. He and Mohawk Man say they want to thank the many volunteers, businesses and others who stepped up to help the Veterans settle into their new home.
