The Vermilion County Courthouse may soon have a new name!
County Board Chairman Mike Marron says someone approached him suggesting it be called the Rita B. Garman Justice Center – after the former Chief Justice of the Illinois Supreme Court from Danville.
”I just love the example that Justice Garman set for the entire community, and her accomplishments, and how she conducts herself as a role model. So I couldn’t get on board fast enough,” said Marron during an interview with VermilionCountyFirst.com News.
Justice Garman still serves on the Illinois Supreme Court. County Board Chairman Marron explained what happens next with the proposal.
”We are going to take a resolution to the Property Committee next week, then assuming it passes we’re going to take the same resolution to the County Board next month. Then there will be a big event planned to dedicate the courthouse and the naming of the courthouse sometime this spring or summer,” added Marron.
A planning committee tasked with organizing the event and designing stringent criteria for the future naming of County Buildings will be co-chaired by County Board Chairman Mike Marron and Amy Brown from CRIS Healthy Aging.
Naming buildings after individuals is nothing new for the community. Several schools have been named after famous individuals. And Danville City Hall was earlier named the Robert E. Jones Municipal Building after one of the city’s long-time mayors.
