A final vote on whether 16 Danville firefighters will be cut is going to come at some later date. Mayor Scott Eisenhauer says Alderwoman Sherry Pickering asked that the proposed cuts be voted on separately from other parts of the budget. But the Mayor adds the vote expected during Tuesday night’s (March 21st, 2017) regular city council meeting is merely a straw poll…and not official action on whether the cuts will be made.
Pickering suggested during a City Council study session on Saturday that 9 additional firefighters be hired, instead of cutting 16. She says the approximately $700-thousand dollars the city spends on overtime costs in that department could cover much of the expense of the new hires.
Mayor Scott Eisenhauer says that after the straw poll the issue of whether firefighters should be cut will be discussed more at future meetings before any final vote. Tuesday’s city council meeting begins at 6:00 p.m. at the Robert E. Jones Municipal Building at 17 West Main Street.
Before the regular council meeting, members of the City Council’s Public Works Committee will meet at 5:30 p.m. The committee plans to continue discussions about possibly raising funds from a new storm water utility fee.
