Some Veterans from the VA Illiana Health Care System in Danville are getting a special treat this week. Some who are in the VA’s Recreation Therapy Program are taking in the action at the NJCAA Division II Men’s National Basketball Tournament.
Melvin Thomas of Springfield was one of the veterans watching the action. ‘’I just love it. I’ve liked basketball all my life. I even watch the pros,’’ says Thomas. He says he favors the Celtics and Lakers.
Charles Buck from Clinton, Illinois was also with the group from the local VA, which is right next door to where the games are being played.
‘’I’ve been here before, but I like to watch basketball,’’ says Buck.
The VA’s Recreation Therapy Program also takes veterans to other locations. For example, those who were attending the games at the NJCAA Tournament were also taken to a local art show. The free show at the Danville Art League which runs until the end of this month features works which were done by veterans.
