Investigations are underway into what caused two Danville fires (Monday) that kept firefighters busy. The first was at a vacant two-story home at 511 Ann Street. Assistant Chief Todd Spicer says firefighters faced difficulties in trying to attack the flames in the vacant structure.
‘’Basically what we had was a fire – heavy fire on the second story of this home. It’s a condemned home, vacant home, however it is full of stuff and it’s made it very difficult to get inside,’’ said Spicer. ‘’The structure is very, very bad. We cannot even get, because of the floor joists being broke I can’t commit crews to the inside. So, all of the firefighting has been pretty much from the outside or from windows. And it seems like we’ve had to cut several trees from the property just to get access from the outside, so it’s been a very difficult fire to fight,’’ added the Assistant Chief.
No sooner had firefighters cleared the scene on Ann Street when another alarm sounded. It was for a house fire at 27 South Buchanan Street. Assistant Chief Spicer described what firefighters found there.
‘’When we got on the scene we couldn’t see any visible fire, but we seen smoke coming from all sides of the building. And it was chugging pretty good. We committed some crews to the inside for awhile, but we could not find any visible fire, and ended up pulling them back out until we could get an exterior attack on this and try to find the fire. We’re starting to make progress on it now,’’ added Spicer.
One occupant of the home on South Buchanan Street suffered minor burns to his face, but refused medical attention on the scene.
Some off-duty Danville Firefighters were called to the scene of both fires to help.
