Danville District 118 School Board members are still struggling to find a ‘common thread’ on whether to change the Uniform Standard of Dress policy. During a special board meeting Friday afternoon School Board member Darlene Halloran said she agrees the dress code is important, and people should have a voice on it. But Halloran added discipline needs the same attention.
‘’It doesn’t matter what we put on paper,’’ said another board member Lon Henderson. ‘’If we don’t have the general support, nothing will change,’’ added Henderson. ‘’We are only successful when our parents are willing to help follow policy, so what standards are the parents along with staff and this board willing to support?’’
District 118 Superintendent Alicia Geddis says results of a vote among Danville High School staff members on dress were split. Dr. Geddis added one-third of the staff supported solid color, collared polos and khakis; one-third supported the same thing but adding hoodies; and the other third voted to return to the old dress policy which allowed students to wear what they want with some restrictions.
The School Board has called another special meeting for 5:30 p.m. today (Monday, June 5th) to continue the discussion on the 2017-2018 Ownership in Education policy. The meeting will occur in the Jackson Building Board room at 516 North Jackson Street.
The school board is expected to make a final decision on whether any changes will be made to the Uniform Standard of Dress when it meets again on June 21st. Board members are also expected to act on any other changes that evening regarding the Ownership in Education Policies.
