An investigation is underway into a fatal house fire in Danville. Danville Firefighters responded to the alarm at 715 Cleveland Street shortly after 2:00 a.m. Sunday. Fire officials say the front of the vacant home was engulfed in flames, and the roof of the front porch had already collapsed. It was not until the fire was extinguished and firefighters were doing overhaul when they discovered the body of a male on the front porch area.
The Vermilion County Coroner’s office has not yet released the identity of the victim. Someone dropped a bouquet of flowers off at the site Sunday with a hand-written message that the victim was loved. (*Note the flowers in the lower center of the photo.)
One firefighter suffered minor injuries battling the flames. And some off-duty firefighters were called to assist. There were 3 engine companies, a truck company and fire investigators on the scene. The flames destroyed the home and also caused some heat damage to a home next door.
Fire units were on the scene for nearly three-and-a-half hours.
