Some area residents will be able to stay cool this summer thanks to a donation from Ameren Illinois. Fifty window air conditioners were donated by Ameren to the East Central Illinois Community Action Agency. They will help income-qualified families, seniors, and people with disabilities stay cool.
George Justice, Division Director for Ameren, says funds for the new air conditioners do not come from power bills. ‘’No it does not. It’s part of a charity program that we have that the stockholders pay for.’’
And Justice adds, ‘’Well, it’s part of an overall program we have called ‘Ameren Cares.’ And statewide I think we have given away – or are giving away 450 air conditioners. Fortunately 50 of them will be given away here in Danville.’’
Danville Mayor Scott Eisenhauer attended the presentation at Temple Plaza…which is located across the street from the Community Action Agency office. ‘’I don’t think any of us recognize the number of people in this community who – on a 95-degree day like today – aren’t going inside the air-conditioning, and what that does to the quality of life,’’ said the Mayor. ‘’It’s difficult for them to sleep, it’s difficult for ‘em to eat when you’re in temperatures all day-long of 95 and above. So Ameren – and East Central Illinois Community Action Agency working together – partnering together and coming-up with the opportunity to distribute 50 air-conditioners throughout our community is going to greatly enhance the lives of fifty more families here in this city,’’ added Mayor Eisenhauer.
And some of the air-conditioners were immediately loaded into the vehicles of people who qualify for them. The rest of this week daytime high temperatures are expected to be in the ninties.
