The Danville Department of Public Safety has issued their annual list of reminders for the public for the Fourth of July holiday.
Director Larry Thomason says the only fireworks allowed for possession by a non-licensed individual are smoke or glow worm pellets, smoke devices, sparklers, and “party popper” , “snapper” or “paper cap” noisemakers. He added specific prohibition exists for handheld fireworks, torpedoes, skyrockets, roman candles and buzz bombs.
Thomason says even sparklers can be dangerous, especially for young children. They can heat up to a core temperature of 1800 degrees Fahrenheit. His suggestions for adults who allow sparklers at their homes:
- Supervise the activity
- Teach the young person to hold the sparkler away from their body and do not swing it around
- Make sure the sparkler is kept in an open area away from combustibles
- Do not allow the young person to light the sparkler
- Have a bucket of water near to discard the used sparkler wire
Fireworks of any type are prohibited in all city parks.
Thomason also asks that the public be aware of where they park while observing firework displays, and be mindful of public and private parking restrictions.
