New figures released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and the Illinois Department of Labor show unemployment rose last month in our area. Vermilion County’s jobless rate rose from 6.0 percent of the workforce in May to 6.8 percent. And in Danville, the unemployment rate climbed more than one-percent, from 7.2 to 8.3 percent.
Unemployment is also up in the Champaign-Urbana metropolitan statistical area. It rose from 4.0 percent in May to 4.8 percent last month.
In Edgar County the unemployment rate rose from 4.2 to 4.8 percent. And in Iroquois County unemployment also rose slightly – going from 3.9 to 4.1 percent.
The 6.8 percent unemployment rate in Vermilion County last month was down from 7.0 percent one year ago in June. In June of this year there were an estimated 2,300 unemployed in the labor force in Vermilion County.
Over the year, Vermilion County saw its non-farm employment decrease by 200. There were job gains reported in Manufacturing and the Leisure-Hospitality sectors, which saw gains of 100 jobs each. However the Construction, Financial Activities, and Other Services categories each recorded a loss of 100 jobs compared to one year ago.
The unemployment rates released today have not been seasonally adjusted.
