The new school year is getting underway, and on Saturday a Community Day event at the David S. Palmer Arena is going to help welcome students back. It will also spotlight the start of the DHS football season. Danville High School Head Football Coach Marcus Forrest hopes to see a big turnout for the free event which runs from 3:00 until 6:00 p.m. Saturday. ‘’It’s a chance for the community to come out and come together,’’ said Coach Forrest. ‘’I know when we were pretty good in 2009 and 2010 – we went to the Semi-Finals and the Playoffs — the community came together a lot! And I saw just how important it was for that to happen. So I figured instead of waiting until you’re winning why not find an opportunity to bring everybody together now – to build that excitement for the team, build that excitement for the community,’’ said Coach Forrest. ‘’You know our first game is August 25th in Kankakee, and we hope people will travel. But also September 1st is our first home game and I would love to see the stands packed.’’
Forrest (shown here) says Saturday’s event will give the students a chance to be recognized. ‘’It’s a chance for all the kids to get seen. A chance for the community to come out and see them and all come together. We’ll have the football team. We’ll have the cheerleaders. We’ll have the drum line there. We’re going to have five different speakers come out and try to help motivate the kids and the community. We’re going to have games. We’re going to have the last three homecoming queens there – so that families that have little girls, they have something where they can come out and take pictures of the homecoming queens. The boys will be throwing footballs with the kids. We’re going to have blow-up games and a dee-jay who is playing music,’’ added the Coach.
Again, that Community Day event is at the David S. Palmer Arena on Saturday, August 19th, from 3:00 until 6:00 p.m. Admission is free.
On Friday (August 18th), Freshmen only report for the first day of school at Danville High School. They will attend for an abbreviated schedule from 7:00 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. at DHS.
Other District 118 schools report Monday, August 21st. It will be an early dismissal day for students but meals will be served. Pre-Kindergarten sessions will not be held Monday or Tuesday, August 21st and 22nd. And due to Monday’s solar eclipse, District 118 has adjusted dismissal times. All elementary schools in the Danville district will dismiss at 1:50 p.m. Monday. South View Upper Elementary School and North Ridge Middle School will dismiss Monday at 3:05 p.m. And both Danville High School and the Kenneth D. Bailey Academy will dismiss at 2:20 p.m. Monday.
