Wet, cold weather this spring was bad news for farmers. But it is extending the season for fresh sweetcorn lovers this year. Toby Brown of Lingley Brothers Sweetcorn of Rossville says there were a lot of weather challenges in April and early May. ‘’It’s all about having equally timed plantings. And when you have things out there that affect your emergence then you end-up having one planting ready at the same time as another portion of one planting. And we’ve been all over,’’ said Brown.
Brown says they plant at different times – usually planting corn around 15 different times – so it will be ready at different times to sell. This year, though, the season is running later than normal. ‘’We’re actually just starting to hit our prime. It’s weird to be this late into August and just now really getting on top of a mountain of corn,’’ says Brown. ‘’But it’s made the season go late, so I expect to have corn probably until nearly the end of September.’’
Lingley Brothers Sweetcorn is available at roadside stands in Hoopeston, Tilton, Rantoul, and Attica, and along route 119 south of Rossville. Brown says they are open ‘’pretty much every day’’ as long as they have corn available.
