The Danville City Council has given the green light for applications to be submitted seeking grant monies to help both the Police and Fire Departments. Aldermen approved applying for a $32,400 JAG grant – which is an Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant. If approved, the money would be split between the City of Danville and Vermilion County. The City plans to use its money to help pay for police overtime patrols.
The $149-thousand dollar grant being sought for the Danville Fire Department would be used for technology upgrades. A portion of those upgrades would allow firefighters to see whether railroad crossings are blocked before they ever leave their station when responding to emergencies. And there would also be other technology upgrades. The City of Danville would be required to pay a $14,900 local match in order to receive the grant. The fire grant money is provided by the Federal Emergency Management Agency and Department of Human Services.
