The City of Danville though it’s Danville Area Transportation Study has begun looking at ways to improve Bowman Avenue as an alternative to constructing a new beltline on the east side of Danville. The City is also studying safety improvements to portions of Vermilion Street.
Some of the objectives of this study are to:
• Provide easy access from I-74 to undeveloped lands on the northeast side of Danville for new industrial and commercial growth
• Provide improved access to the Vermilion County Regional Airport
• Relieve congestion on IL Route 1
• Improve safety on Bowman Avenue and Vermilion Streets
• Preserve and stabilize the owner occupied housing market along Vermilion Street
• Revitalize the existing Bowman Avenue commercial corridor.
The study began last year when the City engaged Hanson Professional Services to research the existing conditions and forecast future trends if no improvements to Bowman are made. The project is now in the second study phase where public ideas and opinions are needed. Residents and business owners are invited to discuss the Bowman Avenue and Vermilion Street Corridor Plan at a public meeting from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Thursday, September 21st, at the American Legion Post 210 at 201 Prospect Place, Danville, IL 61832.
Since the meeting will be an open forum, residents and business owners may stop by any time between 6:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. The purpose of the public meeting is to informally meet with interested individuals, groups, and involved agencies to discuss the proposed Bowman Avenue and Vermilion Street Corridor Plan. The meeting will be conducted by Hanson Professional Services Inc., the City’s consultant for the project, with assistance from the Department of Urban Services. Citizens are encouraged to attend the September 21st public meeting, ask questions, and provide input.
All comments made at the meeting will be given careful consideration by Hanson Professional Services Inc. and the City of Danville. Written statements may also be submitted during the meeting. In addition to the public meeting, the City of Danville is conducting an online survey about multi-modal safety and vision for the Vermilion Street and Bowman Avenue Corridors. The survey can be completed at www.cityofdanville.org/opinion.
