The American Red Cross says more volunteers will be needed in the days and weeks ahead to handle hurricane relief efforts in Florida, Texas, Louisiana, and Georgia. And the Red Cross in Central and Southern Illinois has established a fast track training program for volunteers. Those who complete the program and a required background check will be able to deploy to help with the hurricane recovery efforts.
The training is being offered on several days at various locations including:
- Saturday, September 23rd at the I Hotel and Conference Center at 1900 South 1st in Champaign.
- Saturday, September 30th at the Red Cross office at One Westport Court in Bloomington.
- Saturday, September 30th at the Red Cross office at 2674 North Main Street in Decatur.
- Saturday, September 16th at the County EMA office building at 311 Miracle Avenue in Effingham.
- Saturday, September 23rd or Saturday, October 7th at the Children’s Safety Village at the University of Illinois in Springfield at 4521 S. 11th
The training is free, but registration is requested. All sessions are from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. If you would like to register contact Laura.Streid@redcross.org or call 309-662-0500 extension 7428. When registering you are asked to specify where you plan to undergo the training.
The Red Cross is also reminding citizens that they can help people affected by Hurricane Irma by visiting redcross.org, or by calling 1-800-RED-CROSS or texting the word IRMA to 90999 to make a $10 donation.
