The Danville District 118 School Board last night approved the dismissal of Gregory Lazzell from his duties as the district food service director.
Lazzell had been suspended without pay last week pending last night’s special meeting and hearing.
On Sept. 15, Lazzell had felony charges filed on him in the Vermilion County Circuit Court; one Class 1 felony for theft of between $10,000 and $100,000 from a school, five counts of Class 3 felony intimidation and one Class 3 felony count of official misconduct. He is free on bond.
The Commercial-News reported that the board voted to dismiss “effective immediately for reasons other than a reduction of force” as read in a motion aloud by board President Bill Dobbles, and that the board had been advised by legal counsel to not comment further.
In the report, Dobbles said it was his belief that an interim person will continue running the food service for the semester. Many people had been filling in that role in the past week.
