Vermilion County is still waiting to close the deal on acquiring the former U.S. District Court building in downtown Danville. County Board Chairman Mike Marron is anxious to complete the process. ‘’We’re just awaiting final approval from the National Park Service which has control of the building now. But all indications are that they’re going to approve the process any day now. It’s just hurry-up and wait,’’ said Marron during an interview with VermilionCountyFirst.com News.
The County plans to move offices which are currently located in the Vermilion County Courthouse Annex to the federal building. The move is occurring primarily because of concerns over the condition of Bresee Tower next door to the Annex. Mayor Scott Eisenhauer says Bresee is structurally sound but there have been some concerns about bits of terra cotta falling from the outside of the building.
Marron (shown here) adds it is going to take some time to relocate the county offices once the deal on accepting the federal building is approved. ‘’Ideally once we get ownership of the building, I would hope at that point we could do the move within a year. Basically it’s going to have to be a staged move because the departments are still going to have to be able to function.’’
Offices that will relocate include the County Clerk, Treasurer, Danville Board of Election Commission, County Board, Supervisor of Assessments and others. But for now it appears none of those offices will be moving anytime soon.
