A construction crew accidentally cut through a natural gas pipeline near Danville’s Public Safety Building late this morning (Oct. 17, 2017), sending natural gas spilling into the neighborhood. But Danville Public Safety Director Larry Thomason says the leak has been capped by a crew from Ameren Illinois Power Company. And some workers in the area who were evacuated from nearby businesses have been allowed to return to work.
Director Thomason says workers were asked to leave the nearby MSI Building and a bank because the wind was blowing the fumes toward those buildings. But the area has since been declared safe for those employees.
The construction crew was working on digging out part of South Street where some improvements are being made.
Director Thomason says Walnut Street south of Main – in the area of the David S. Palmer Arena east to the east entrance to the Public Safety Building would remain closed until Ameren crews finished some emergency repairs on the pipeline.
