The Danville City Council has cleared the way for a storage business and possibly a fitness center to move into the former K-Mart building. The City Council approved a request last night (Tuesday) for a special use permit for McCormack Family Investments, LLC. The company plans to place mini storage units in a climate controlled environment inside the building in the 2700 block of North Vermilion Street once some renovations are completed.
The developers say tentative plans call for a Planet Fitness Center to go into the west end of the building. But so far the developers only have a non-binding letter of intent for the fitness center. The deal of purchasing the building is expected to be closed by December.
Not all council members favor using the K-Mart building for storage units. Alderman Lloyd Randle said such a facility is ‘’not fitting for the area’’. Randle says it is a prime retail location.
Alderman Steve Foster said he is concerned about the condition of the building. But he said his major concern is who knows what might step-up for that area if the city rejects this proposal. Alderman Steve Nichols added: ‘’If not this – then what?’’ And Vice Mayor Brenda Brown thinks the new storage business will be an improvement for the area.
