Bond has been set at $750-thousand dollars for a rural Danville man who is facing charges in a fatal Friday night crash. Sixty-year-old David D. Winkler Jr. is charged with aggravated driving under the influence involving a fatality. He was also charged with possession of a weapon by a felon and having no firearm owner’s identification card.
Vermilion County Sheriff’s Police say Winkler was driving a pick-up truck which crossed the center line and struck an SUV head-on Friday evening. The crash claimed the life of the woman driving the sport utility vehicle – 53-year-old Heather K. Roberts of Danville. Coroner Jane McFadden released the victim’s name today (Monday).
During his initial court appearance Winkler pleaded not guilty to the charges. The Vermilion County Public Defender’s Office was appointed to represent him in future court proceedings, including a preliminary hearing early next month.
The crash occurred shortly before 6:00 p.m. Friday, October 20th, 2017, along Bowman Avenue between the Winter Avenue and Liberty Lane intersections.
