A more than 30-year-old tradition continued Thursday at Danville’s Edison Elementary School as students got a ‘Taste of the Colonies’. Fourth grade teacher Jim Rogers says students who have been studying the colonies got to see how pioneers fixed their meals.
‘’We’ve got an old-fashioned cider press making apple cider. We’re making fry bread – it’s kind of like a donut with cinnamon and sugar. We’re baking an apple – butterscotch cobbler with cast-iron Dutch ovens….and we’re making butter by churning it and shaking it. And we’ll also have some bread to go with that butter,’’ said Rogers.
And what does Rogers hope the students learn by helping to make those items?
‘’I hope they understand a little bit more of American history. How hard the pioneers had to work just to get a meal,’’ said Rogers. ‘’That’s the main thing we want them to take away from this is just – a living history – how hard it was to live back then.’’
The Vermilion County Conservation District and several parents assisted with the event. Some Edison School students were also shown how candles were made in the old days.
