The Executive Director of an Alabama company that wants to save Danville’s historic Bresee Tower says he is disappointed. ‘’Our organization is disappointed that Mayor (Scott) Eisenhauer has chosen to file suit against us, less than one week after our accepting the challenge of restoring the Bresee Tower,’’ said Scottie Porter on Tuesday, Porter is Executive Director of Historic Restorations, Inc, Parent company of Land Company of Danville, LLC.
‘’We expected the Mayor, City Aldermen, and County Board to all welcome us to Danville, and pledge their assistance to this project in a meaningful manner,’’ added Porter. And he adds the first contact he has had with the Mayor’s Office was being served regarding the lawsuit.
The suit says Land Company of Danville, Inc. has failed or refused to adequately repair or to otherwise put the building at 4 North Vermilion Street in Danville in a safe condition. The suit says the cost to repair the structure may exceed the current estimated market value of the building. And the City of Danville’s suit says the cost of demolition, wrecking or repairing the building is recoverable from the owner or owners of the real estate.
The suit also says the matter requires immediate expedition in the interest of public welfare and safety. The City asks is asking the court to fine Land Company of Danville, Inc. not less than $200 nor more than $1,000 per day for each day that violations in Bresee Tower are not corrected. And the City seeks authorization to file a lien against the real estate for costs of demolition, including court costs and attorney’s fees and other costs associated with the demolition of the building.
