For the second time in two days…there has been a fatal accident in Danville. Public Safety Director Larry Thomason says a 31-year-old Danville woman was pronounced dead at the scene following a head-on collision on Bowman Avenue this afternoon (Friday, November 17th, 2017). Two other people were hurt in the crash, including a toddler, believed to be two or three years old, who was traveling with the woman.
The crash occurred at 12:21 p.m. on Bowman Avenue just north of Voorhees Street. Director Thomason says witnesses reported the woman who died was traveling at a high rate of speed when she apparently lost control of her vehicle. It struck a northbound pickup truck head-on. The 66-year-old driver of the truck and the toddler who was traveling with the victim were both transported to an Urbana hospital for treatment. Director Thomason says all of the people involved in the crash are from Danville, but their names are not being released at this time.
The crash was the second fatal accident in Danville in two days.
Champaign County Coroner Duane Northrup released the name of the victim in Thursday’s crash. He said the victim is 52-year-old Michael Shanks of Kokomo, Indiana. Shanks died Thursday afternoon at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana after being involved in a head-on collision on Memorial Bridge along South Gilbert Street in Danville. Two other people were hurt in that crash but their names were not immediately released. Public Safety Director Larry Thomason said one was a passenger in the Shanks vehicle and is also from Kokomo, Indiana. He says the other driver involved is a 19-year-old Danville man. Thomason says the investigation into the crash is continuing, but preliminary reports indicate the vehicle being operated by the 19-year-old crossed into the wrong lane of traffic.
