December is right around the corner, and that has some Vermilion County office-holders looking forward to next year’s move.
Offices which are currently located at the Vermilion County Courthouse Annex will be starting their move to the former Federal Court Building at 201 North Vermilion Street in early 2018.
Vermilion County Board Chairman Mike Marron (shown in photo) is looking forward to getting the offices in their new home, and he explained to VermilionCountyFirst.com News the lay-out plan for the new location. ”You know most of the departments the public needs access to — the County Clerk, the Treasurer, the Recorder of Deeds — they’re all going to be on the first floor. The County Board and the County Board chambers is going to be on the second floor, along with the Auditor. And then the third floor will be the Supervisor of Assessments. And of course, we’re really happy to get the Emergency Management Agency out of the building on Georgetown Road. And so their headquarters is going to be in the basement of the building,” said Marron.
Marron adds the Danville Board of Election Commission office will also be relocating to the basement of the new Vermilion County Administration Building. He notes that will make the election office easily accessible during early voting and other times.
Marron expects there to be no interruption of services during the move. And he adds the county does not plan to just leave the annex as an empty building. Marron would like to see it renovated as part of the efforts to save Bresee Tower. But he adds if Bresee Tower cannot be saved…the county would be willing to pay for demolition costs for the annex.
The Federal Building was built in 1911 and was the Danville Post Office until the General Services Administration purchased it in 1988. It served as a federal courthouse for many years until those offices moved to Urbana.
