Work on some street and road improvements have been completed in our area, as leaders look forward to 2018. More projects are already on the drawing board for the new year.
Vermilion County Highway Engineer Doug Staske says finishing touches are being placed on some major improvements along West Newell Road. He called it a good project during a meeting of the Technical Committee of the Danville Area Transportation Study Group on Thursday.
Some bridge repairs along Interstate 74 near Danville were also completed this year.
There are several local and area projects on the State Department of Transportation’s January bid-letting. One involves plans for a new roundabout intersection at Jackson and English Streets in Danville. And bridge repairs are slated for a bridge on Voorhees Street over Stoney Creek. The bridge is located near Collett Street.
And if all goes as planned, a major project will also be on the January bid-letting for the Village of Tilton. It involves putting in a new intersection at Illinois route one and 15th Street, including new traffic signals. The road and intersection are designed to divert traffic off of 14th Street ramps at route one, which will be closed. Also included in the Tilton project is an upgrade for traffic signals along Illinois route one at Southgate Drive (near the Big R and County Market Stores).
Projects completed this year in Danville included upgrades along Fairchild Street near Danville High School, and safety and other improvements along South Street in the area stretching from the David S. Palmer Arena south and east past the Public Safety Building.
Danville Urban Services Director David Schnelle noted during the meeting that the City of Danville has applied for federal funds to assist with improvements along Denmark Road. The project includes sanitary sewer improvements and a proposed shared use path (bicycles and pedestrians) that would run adjacent to the Dallas Bowman Bridge over Lake Vermilion.
