Investigations continue into what caused two fires Tuesday (January 2, 2018) which were fought by Danville Firefighters in brutal weather conditions.
The first at 314 North Alexander Street left damages which were estimated at $33-thousand dollars. As we had reported Tuesday, the alarm originally sounded as a wood-burner on fire, but when firefighters arrived they discovered the blaze had spread to a stack of wood in the home and into walls.
Some off-duty personnel were called to help as firefighters were faced with sub-zero temperatures and wind-chills. The cold temperatures caused problems with frozen hoses, and when equipment was picked up after the fire some of the frozen hoses had to be loaded into the bed of a truck.
Danville Mass Transit provided a bus on the scene to help firefighters stay warm as they rotated personnel fighting the blaze.
The other fire Tuesday was also fought in dangerously cold temperatures and wind-chills. It was at 205 East Third Street. Firefighters found heavy flames coming from the rear of the home when they arrived shortly after 9:00 p.m. The occupants managed to escape safely and there were no injuries to firefighters. Damage estimates in the Third Street fire were placed at $12-thousand dollars.
The house which was heavily damaged is located next door to another home which was destroyed by fire last year. (You can see the home involved in last year’s fire to the left of this one that burned Tuesday.)
