Oakwood Police and the Vermilion County Sheriff’s Department are investigating a threat which resulted with Oakwood’s schools being closed today (Tuesday). Superintendent Gary Lewis says an email threat was received late Monday and was reported to the police. Lewis says the investigation into that threat is on-going, and in the interest of safety to students and staff, the decision was made to cancel classes today (Tuesday, January 9th).
[Update: It was announced Tuesday evening that classes will be in session on Wednesday, January 10, 2017.] The Oakwood Superintendent had said schools would re-open as soon as school officials and police deem it advisable. The Superintendent’s message was sent by email.
Oakwood Unit 76 Schools were the only ones in our area which were closed today. But it was the threat – and not weather conditions – that resulted with classes being called off. There have been several days lately where weather has caused districts to close or delay their start times. And another weather system headed our way for late Thursday into early Saturday could potentially impact classes on Friday.
The National Weather Service in Lincoln says there is a possibility for significant snow during the period between Thursday night and early Saturday. Some forecast models are saying there is a potential for between 6 inches and a foot of snow across our region. But the path of the heavy snow could change. On Thursday a rain-snow mixture is expected before it changes to all snow.
