Illinois State Police say a 27-year-old Danville man is dead and five other people hurt as the result of a single-vehicle accident along Interstate 74. The name of the person killed has not been released yet by the Vermilion County Coroner.
Trooper Tracy Lillard told VermilionCountyFirst.com News the vehicle involved was traveling east-bound along the interstate, west of the Ogden exit, when the driver apparently lost control. The vehicle went into the median shortly after 11:30 p.m. Friday, and flipped over, ejecting two of the six occupants.
The 27-year-old Danville man was pronounced dead at the scene. Some of the others involved also suffered life-threatening injuries and were listed in critical condition according to State Police. Their names were not immediately released, but Trooper Lillard says they are all from Chicago. They range in age from 16 to 22.
State Police were still trying to determine who was driving, but add alcohol was a factor in the crash. An Illinois State Police accident reconstruction team was called in to investigate, and the interstate in the area of the crash did not re-open until just after 5:30 this (Saturday) morning.
Trooper Lillard added that there was a second accident in the westbound lanes after the first crash. Other information on that accident was not immediately released.
