Danville Mayor Scott Eisenhauer says he is extremely disappointed about the announcement that Carson’s will be closing its Village Mall store. The mayor notes the Danville store is among more than 40 that the company is closing nationwide. And Mayor Eisenhauer adds, ‘’it is imperative that our residents know that this closure is not a ‘Danville’ issue, but the trend of what we are seeing with ‘brick and mortar’ stores across the country.’’
Vicki Haugen, President of Vermilion Advantage, (shown here) agrees with the mayor. ‘’This is unfortunately a recurring theme and a sign of the times,’’ said Haugen in a statement to VermilionCountyFirst.com News. ‘’With apparel being one of those leakage areas we were just starting to recover in, this announcement is extremely disappointing,’’ added Haugen.
And Haugen says she was advised by the Village Mall ownership that they were just notified Wednesday, too, that Carson’s will be closing. ‘’So it is hard for property owners to be proactive when they are faced with this knowledge at the same time of the general public,’’ she added.
Mayor Eisenhauer adds that ‘’as long as people continue to shop on-line, the presence of stores in communities like ours will continue to dwindle. People need to change their shopping habits relying more on the stores present in a city rather than courting the comforts of online shopping, or other national chains are likely to follow suit.’’
