Potential jurors in a Danville murder case were told today (Tuesday) that they were being asked to perform a difficult but important job. Circuit Judge Thomas O’Shaughnessy was addressing a panel of over 50 potential jurors who had been called for possible selection to hear the case against 34-year-old DeJuan Alexander of Indianapolis.
Judge O’Shaughnessy added that he is ‘’always pleased at how seriously the citizens of this county take this responsibility.’’
Assistant Attorneys General from the Illinois Attorney General’s Office are handling the case for the prosecution. Alexander has a team of lawyers representing him. The defendant is charged with first-degree murder in the March 16th, 2014 shooting death of 25-year-old Demaree Tetter. The shooting occurred on a parking lot outside the Deuce’s bar on North Vermilion Street.
This is the second trial for Alexander. Judge O’Shaughnessy declared a mistrial in his first trial in October of 2016 when the jury was unable to reach a unanimous decision.
In court today (Tuesday) Judge O’Shaughnessy read 50 names of people who may be called to testify in this trial. The judge also told jurors that attorneys believe the trial will likely last two weeks.
