Voters in Vermilion County have rejected a proposal to raise the sales tax by one-percent on certain items. Final, unofficial figures from Tuesday’s vote shows 4,464 people voted in favor of raising the sales tax, but 5,103 voted against it.
Some Vermilion County school boards had said they intended to use the new revenues to reduce property taxes.
Also Tuesday, voters approved the proposed Potomac Public Library District, and also approved raising taxes to support the care of cemeteries in Carroll Township.
Danville Mayor Scott Eisenhauer had voiced strong opposition to the proposal to raise the sales tax. The Mayor said if the increase was approved it would have placed Danville in a position of having the highest sales tax in downstate Illinois. And he feared the increase would drive shoppers…and possibly businesses….out of Danville.
