Danville (IL) – Danville police have arrested a 20 year old person who committed a bank robbery Thursday morning.
Director of Public Safety Larry Thomason said that a passerby called 911 at about 11:30 AM Thursday reporting a suspicious person entering the First Midwest Bank at 100 N Gilbert Street. “Moments after that call, bank personnel called the 911 Center advising of a holdup,” Thomason said.
Thomason said that a male subject had entered the bank and demanded money of a cashier, implying he had a weapon. The subject was given an undisclosed amount of money and left the building.
“Outside the facility the subject tried to enter a vehicle a woman was getting into. She fought him off and got inside her car locking the doors,” Thomason said. “The subject then went to a pickup truck but the driver drove off and the subject was last seen fleeing northbound.”
Witnesses were able to provide police officers with a last known location and the subject was found in an alley in the 100 block of Robinson Street. He was taken into custody without incident.
According to Thomason, Ruben Portugal of Danville has been preliminarily charged with Armed Robbery and Attempted Vehicle Hijacking. He is being held at the Public Safety Building.
Monies taken in the robbery were recovered. No one was reported injured in the incident.
