A team of young people from AmeriCorps is enthusiastically pitching in on some projects in Danville. The eight member team consists of 18 to 24 year old youth from across the country.
Team Leader Kasy Huston explains what her team has been doing as it helps to prepare Habitat for Humanity’s new ReStore building in Danville.
”We have people prepping some steel surfaces to be painted, We have people working on getting some piping ripped out of the building, fixing some holes in the wall, clearing some draining,” said Huston (shown here). ”Eventually we will be doing some install of windows, dry-wall and insulation.”
Huston says the new Habitat ReStore will also include a ‘Use-eum’….
”So that will be for people who maybe want to renovate their house. They can come in and take a look at how to side a house – how to install a toilet,” said Huston.
The AmeriCorps team is splitting its time between Habitat and the City of Danville’s Parks and Public Property Department. Huston says they have been doing a tree inventory…
”We pretty much go around to all the public parks in Danville, and we measure at breast height what the diameter of the tree is, what kind of tree it is, and the health condition,” said Huston. ”That way they can figure out what they have, what needs to be removed, and assessing how many trees you guys have in an urban area.”
Parks and Public Property Superintendent Steve Lane says most cities hire consultants to conduct tree inventories. And he adds that typically costs around $30-thousand dollars. But with the AmeriCorp NCCC Team, the City of Danville is getting it done at no cost.
In addition to the AmeriCorp Team featured above, some Covington High School students who are in the National Honor Society have also been helping to prepare Habitat for Humanity’s new ReStore building which is located in the 400 block of North Vermilion Street in Danville.
