Although Danville School Board members have approved a new Standard of Dress Policy, some board members are questioning whether it will be enforced. School Board member Darlene Halloran questions who is going to enforce it. She claimed last night that ‘’for the most-part’’ teachers have not enforced the old policy. ‘’The message we have clearly sent is if you don’t like the rules – don’t follow them,’’ said Halloran. ‘’This seems from the top down,’’ she added.
School Board President Bill Dobbles said he liked the way students looked – especially when the policy was first adopted. He also likes the way t-shirts have been made for each individual school.
Board member Dr. Randal Ashton noted that when a Uniform Standard of Dress was first entertained the board was looking for a positive change. ‘’What we have been looking for did not materialize,’’ he added. And Ashton said the District ‘’needs to push the re-set button and go back 4 or 5 years’’ (regarding the dress policy).
Ashton and some other board members are hoping they do not have to visit the issue again. The new policy was approved by a 4 to 2 vote last night with board members Gladys Davis and Darlene Halloran voting ‘No’. Board member Pastor Thomas Miller missed the meeting.
