Vermilion County Sheriff’s Police are warning area residents about a scam. Sheriff’s Captain Eric Deck says someone has cloned the department’s phone number and has been targeting local offices in the medical field.
Deck says the caller tells someone in the office that there will be a warrant for them if they fail to appear for jury duty. The caller tells the person answering the phone that they can avoid being arrested by putting money on a card. Captain Deck says the Sheriff’s Department never calls someone to let them know there is a warrant for their arrest. He says if you receive such a call you should just hang-up.
Deck added whoever is running the scam makes it sound as though it really is the sheriff’s department calling. He says the caller tells the person answering the phone that they can press certain numbers to speak with various areas of the department. But Deck warns it is a scam!! He says the Vermilion County Sheriff’s Department received about a half dozen calls from medical professionals Wednesday afternoon asking about it.
If you do fall prey to the scam sheriff’s police would like you to report it. But he adds there is really not much that authorities can do because the cards are untraceable.
