A small plane crash north the Vermilion Regional Airport this (Friday) evening has left the pilot injured. Vermilion County Sheriff’s Captain Eric Deck tells VermilionCountyFirst.com News the pilot was the sole occupant of the plane which crashed early this evening near the Illinois-Indiana state line.
Deck says the pilot has been transferred from the scene by a Lifeline helicopter to an area hospital for treatment. Information on his condition was not immediately available, and his name has not been released.
Captain Deck says representatives from the Federal Aviation Administration were already at the Vermilion Regional Airport attending Balloons Over Vermilion. He says sheriff’s police escorted those FAA representatives to the site of the plane crash. In addition, Deck adds the National Transportation Safety Board has been notified about the crash.
Deck says the crash was located far enough from the airport that events at Balloons Over Vermilion were allowed to continue. The balloons did fly on schedule…prior to a scheduled balloon glo and laser light show.
