Danville District 118 Schools which operate on the traditional schedule are set to begin the new school year in three weeks. And that has workers racing to complete some major improvements at Edison Elementary School.
District 118 Director of Buildings and Grounds Skip Truex says he is confident the building will be ready to open. But he also realizes that all of the work at Edison will likely not be done when school opens.
‘’It’s going to be close,’’ said Truex Monday. He added discussions have already been held with the contractor regarding which rooms absolutely need to be ready when school starts.

Some workers from Ameren were busy Monday upgrading the electrical service to the school which was built in 1929. Other workers have been installing a new heating and air-conditioning system, new steel doors – and the school’s most noticeable improvement – new windows. When completed the new windows at Edison School will look like the ones installed earlier at Danville High School.

Truex says some things are out of his and the contractor’s hands. For example the weather and the fact that some of the window materials are on back-order. Some work is expected to be done at night in order to get Edison ready to open on time.
Meanwhile Truex notes there are a lot of other projects around Danville’s Public Schools this summer. ‘’Every school is getting something – from tearing out 25 year old carpeting to painting,’’ said Truex. At Danville High School locker rooms have been upgraded, and some walls in the building have been repaired and painted. A new fence has been installed around the playground at Mark Denman Elementary School this summer. And Truex adds visitors to Danville High School will notice changes that have been made in the hallway leading to the field house.
Truex also notes the bus garage got new doors and windows this summer, along with work on the roof. And the entire building was painted. ‘’A lot of people don’t even realize the school district owns that building,’’ he added.
