Danville City Council members have voted to accept a more than $1-million dollar federal grant that will help pay for six new firefighters. But last night’s vote passed only after lengthy debate.

Alderman Dan Duncheon wanted a side agreement stating the firefighters would agree to a lower minimum manning number (of 10 per shift) when the grant runs out, but the union said no.
The grant will allow six new firefighters to be hired in the near future. The money will pay 75-percent of the annual cost of the new firefighters for the first two years, and then about a third of the cost during the third year.

Ironically the grant money will run out when the firefighters contract is up for renewal in three years.
