Danville’s first ‘roundabout’ intersection, at English and Jackson Streets, is set to open at 7:00 a.m. on Monday, October 29th.
Although there are many roundabout intersections in Indiana, this will be the first one opening to motorists in Vermilion County. Community Development Director David Schnelle says some confusion is expected among motorists at the intersection for awhile. So city staff will be present during the day Monday to answer questions and distribute a handout containing instructions on how to use a roundabout.

Schnelle says roundabouts have proven to be safer than regular intersections. Accidents which do occur take place as vehicles are moving at slower speeds and impact angles are decreased.
City leaders say directions for use of a roundabout include:
- Slow as you approach the intersection;
- As with all designated crosswalks, stop for pedestrians in the crosswalk;
- Yield to traffic within the circle;
- Make only right turns to enter and exit the roundabout;
- Stay off the inner ring. It is for larger trucks and busses only.
