Danville City Council members are zeroing in on a plan to fund next year’s tax levy. A plan discussed by members of the City Council’s Public Works Committee last night (Tuesday) proposes increasing the city’s portion of real estate taxes by a little less than 5-percent. Mayor Rickey Williams noted….
In addition to hiking property taxes there would also be an increase in Danville’s Public Safety Pension Fee….
But even if those proposals are approved, Mayor Williams says the city would still need to make $410-thousand dollars in cuts or add more revenue. One alderman, Jon Cooper, suggested the city reduce funding to the David S. Palmer Arena and possibly Harrison Park. ‘’Why can’t the civic center take care of itself?” – asked Cooper. Another alderman, Rick Strebing, said if the council is going to explore ways to raise money, it should also look at the liquor tax, too.
Discussions on the tax levy are expected to continue next week.
