Salvation Army bell ringers have launched their annual campaign in the Danville area seeking to raise money that helps the agency throughout the year.
Lieutenant John Woodard, co-chairman of the Salvation Army in Danville, says a lot of volunteers step up to man the kettles. Other bell-ringers are paid, though. ‘’It’s just a 5 to 6 week job, so it’s not really a long period – but it does help out people who want to get a job for Christmas time,’’ said Woodard. ‘’But the biggest thing we want to promote is volunteers, obviously,’’ he added, ‘’because we don’t have to pay those people.’’ Lt. Woodard added the Danville area usually haves a large number of volunteers who help, but more are needed.
If you – or your group – would like to help man the bells – call the Danville Salvation office at (217) 442-5911.
The money that is raised goes to support the Salvation Army with its general operations in the Danville area. It also helps run programs there, including character building programs. And some of the funds are used to help with food baskets for Christmas. The bell ringing and mail campaign seeks to raise $100-thousand dollars.
