A candidate for the Danville City Council is asking the Board of Election Commissioners to declare his opponent’s candidacy petitions invalid. Jerry Hawker says the petitions filed by Alderman Rick Strebing list the wrong election date.
Hawker claims the election code is clear that the petitions should have said names on them were being collected for the February 26th Primary Election. But instead, he says petitions filed for Strebing say the names were being collected for the April 2nd Consolidated Election.
Alderman Strebing was not immediately available for comment on the complaint.
Hawker is raising the issue after questions were recently raised regarding whether Hawker is a Danville resident. Hawker says he has two residences, one of which is in Danville. On Monday, Hawker claimed there ‘’are no ifs, ands or buts about it,’’ he is a Danville resident.
It will be up to the Danville Board of Election Commissioners to rule on the complaint Hawker filed Monday regarding Strebing’s petitions. Meanwhile Hawker adds he is proceeding with another complaint – one filed with the Illinois State Board of Elections regarding the group Moving Danville Forward. In a complaint filed earlier with the State Board Hawker claimed Moving Danville Forward should have filed papers with the state listing another name that was being used by the group that had sought to change Danville’s Form of Government.
